First Game for New Stadium Cancelled
Thousands of supporters protested in Warsaw yesterday after the first match to be held in the Euro 2012 stadium was canceled due to security fears.
The game between Legia Warsaw and Wisla Krakow in the Super Cup tie was cancelled on Wednesday. Concerns over the pitch and the lack of available barriers to separate rival fans made it impossible for security staff to control the crowds.
Fans will now have to wait until February 29th for the first game which is a friendly between Poland and Portugal.
Hooliganism is a top concern for the organizers of Euro 2012 and the cancellation is one of many problems the stadium has suffered in its short existence – it was expected to be ready last July but was delayed due to construction issues and a rock concert held on the 29th of January was nearly called off but was green-lighted 2 days before.
The stadium will host the first Euro 2012 game between Poland and Greece on June 8th.
